What we do
Our programs
Vocational Training
Vocational training and job opportunities are crucial for a new generation to emerge from poverty. Our Vocational training program is aimed at bridging the skills gaps among the Ugandan youth to sustainably enable them engage in income generating ventures so as to enhance their employability, productivity and growth.
The program empowers vulnerable youth who had dropped out of school due to poverty, and other family problems by training them in carpentry and joinery, fashion and design, brickmaking, building and construction skills.
Our training model
We use a holistic and comprehensive training model where youth are trained to make different products in their trade during their duration of study which prepares them to be dynamic in the world of work., like in In Carpentry and Joinery course, youth are trained to make doors, desks, dining tables, sofa sets, stools, beds, windows, benches and every piece of wood furniture among others while girls are trained to make all pieces of clothes including dresses, skirts, shirts, short, trousers among others .
Given the youth background, abilities and level of understanding combined with their mental aspects, we learnt that to successfully train vulnerable youth, there is much need to address their emotions, feelings and attitudes through integrating other aspects in their training. We recognized a need to constantly inspire hope among youth and stimulating them to dream big dreams as well as involving them in a lot of fun during the training. The program therefore involves them in sports, music, debate and other fun activities. The joy and excitement of involvement in sports enables them to shed off the mental burdens and stress. During the life skills processes, the adolescents and youth in the program learn skills such as problem solving, decision making, creative thinking, communication, self-awareness, empathy, coping with stress, reading and writing. An important aspect of this phase is to share their new knowledge among their friends, family and community.
Uniqueness of our training program
We use a Earn As You Train model or a job training approach where youth who cannot afford even a subsidized tuition fees and other maintenance fees in their vocational training program are given a chance to study by giving them opportunities to work in the organization’s social enterprises where their labour is converted into tuition fees plus getting money to help them in their maintenance during the training given the fact that the youth we recruit always have many needs.
Given that VECECAB turned our departments into social enterprise that sells products to the community, the youth during training are engaged to work in production and at the end, they are paid for the work done. This greatly motivates youth to learn and at the same time master their skills. The money they earn helps them to keep in school by meeting their basic needs. This model on top of imparting skills, it inculcates the spirit of hard work, discipline, responsibility as well as giving hands on business skills among the youth.
Qualication
To increase their marketability, we make sure that our youth are trained according to national standards. We subject them to National Examinations with Directorate of Industrial Training (DIT) in order to assess their practical skills which has made our youth to become competently trained, excel in national examinations and perform better in their field of work which all prepares them for a better future. Furthermore, we constantly take these youth for internship in big companies like Elim, Roko, Nakawa DIT center among others to get mentorship.
Connecting our vocation training with the community through life projects.
We work together with our students to improve housing conditions for the neediest in our communities by repairing and construction of dilapidated houses, kitchen, toilets, bathrooms and washing rack among others.
Child care and Support
Education is one of the most important means of fighting poverty. It is especially important to give a second chance to girls and boys who have dropped out of school. This program offers care and support to orphans and vulnerable children to increase their access, retention and completeness to primary education through school fees and scholar’s tic material support. The program also promotes child safety and safeguarding interventions in the community.
